As winter dawns near, it is the favourite time for the old and young alike to go on weekend vacations to take off some stress from the daily labours of everyday life. Our very own West Bengal is a treasure chest for several precious weekend getaways. With mountains to it’s north and hillocks and red laterites to the South guarded off by the magnificent mangroves and the far sea in the southernmost boundary and not to forget the many rivers crisscrossing through, one need not go far and wide for a weekend winter getaway.
Purulia is the westernmost district jutting out along the southwestern borders of the state. Dotted with beautifully majestic landscapes and a deep rich history and heritage of its own, Purulia makes for an ideal two-three night tour in the winters. The district experiences some severe chills and if you are one to savour the cold, the destination is all for you. Hundreds of tourists land every year to view the scenic beauty and experience the serenity of rustic tribal Bengal. Purulia is the land where you can find green hillocks spread over the horizon surrounded by huge expanses of water reflecting the blue of the morning and the reddish-yellow of the dusk. Myriads of bird calls and flower scents and mud huts flanking the horizon to fill in your senses of sight, sound and smell.
While there are huge reserves of Palash forests in full orange bloom in the late winter of February, March, there are also Rocky hillocks like the Ajodhya or Joychandi Pahar that serve for trekker or campers’ paradise. There are water bodies like the Panchet and Muruguma dams, tribal habitations in the Ajodhya hills, picnic spots in Baranti and even waterfalls like the Turga Falls. You name it and the natural formation presents before your eyes.
Purulia has a rich historical and social-cultural heritage in its Chou and Jhumur dance and song traditions. These arts are well preserved by the government and are often monetized for the entertainment and enrichment of tourists. You could even get lucky with regard to the shopping of tribal on antiquated fares with the distinct rustic charm and flavour of rural Bengal.
